Bend is in central Oregon, 175 miles SE of Portland. It lies just to the east of the Cascades and the Three Sisters Wilderness Area (a series of volcanic mountains, from S to N: Mt. Bachelor, Broken Top, South, Middle and North Sister, Mt. Washington, Three Fingered Jack, Mt. Jefferson). The Deschutes River runs through Bend, and the Newberry Crater and Volcanic Monument are just to the SE). Smith Rock State Park, one of the world’s premier climbing destinations, lies 25 miles to the north.

Many attendees will want a car to visit the various nearby attractions. Bend has an airport, but those attendees planning to visit Portland for the two succeeding conferences might prefer to fly to the Portland airport and drive to and from Bend.
