Major Research Themes: The units most closely linked to the department are the Center for Adaptive Systems, the Center of Excellence for Learning in Education, Science, and Technology, and the CNS Technology Laboratory. Other Information: CNS students are trained in a broad range of areas concerning computational neuroscience, cognitive science, and neuromorphic systems. The biological training includes study of the brain mechanisms of vision and visual object recognition; audition, speech, and language understanding; recognition learning, categorization, and long-term memory; cognitive information processing; self-organization and development, navigation, planning, and spatial orientation; cooperative and competitive network dynamics and short-term memory; reinforcement and motivation; attention; adaptive sensory-motor planning, control, and robotics; biological rhythms; consciousness; mental disorders; and the mathematical and computational methods needed to support advanced modeling research and applications. Technological training includes methods and applications in image processing, multiple types of signal processing, adaptive pattern recognition and prediction, information fusion, and intelligent control and robotics.

Faculty Profile: Closely related with the psychology department at BGSU, the NCS program consists of 11 faculty members with dual appointments in psychology and NCS.
Major Research Themes: The NCS faculty are involved in research in several different aspects of cognitive science and neuroscience. Research topics include: Inference and judgment, models of science understanding, language, sentence processing, auditory cognition, spatial cognition, attention, memory, vision, neural mechanisms of emotion and cognition, basal ganglia and hippocampal function.
Other Information: The doctoral program places an emphasis on developing both theoretical and experimental skills in the neural and/or cognitive sciences, and is sufficiently flexible to accommodate the varied interests of students. The program offers courses in Statistics, Neuroscience Research Methods, Cognitive Research Methods, Cognitive Psychology, Basic Neuroscience and Cognition, Visual and Auditory Perception, Neuroethology, Behavioral Ecology, Artificial Neural Networks, Human Language, and other subjects. Though students traditionally choose to focus almost exclusively on Cognitive Science or Neuroscience, the program allows students to become involved in research that integrates the two sub-fields. Training is offered both through the Department of Psychology and through the J.P. Scott Center for Neuroscience, Mind, and Behavior.

The concentration emphasizes the approach of generative grammar, which attempts to describe formally the nature of a speaker's knowledge of his or her native language and place this knowledge in a psychological and biological framework. In the last 30 years, this approach to the study of language has had a profound influence on fields as diverse as philosophy, psychology, anthropology, and computer science, as well as the linguist's traditional concerns with modern and classical languages and with linguistic universals.

Faculty Profile: The 16 faculty members in the Brain & Cognitive Science (BCS) area of the Psychology department seek to understand the mental processes and structures that are involved in perceiving, learning, understanding, and acting in ones environment. 
Major Research Themes: Miami’s BCS program adopts several general approaches to understanding how people perceive, understand, and act in their environment. First, faculty with interests in Perception and Cognition focus on understanding general mechanisms that allow sensory, perceptual, and conceptual information to be processed. Second, faculty with interests in Neuroscience attempt to understand how mental processes are represented in the brain by physiological systems. Third, faculty with interests in Human Factors and Ergonomics seek to understand how a person’s environment conveys information that enables one to accomplish his or her goals. Finally, several faculty members study cognitive processes and structures by examining how they develop over the life span. Faculty use a variety of methods, ranging from behavioral measurements (e.g., reaction time experiments) to mathematical modeling, to neurophysiological measurements (i.e. single-cell recording).

Other Information: The Cognitive Systems Program is a multi-disciplinary undergraduate program involving four departments: Computer Science, Linguistics, Philosophy, and Psychology. It provides students with a thorough grounding in the principles and techniques used by intelligent systems (both natural and artificial) to interact with the world around them. The program emphasizes the study of existing systems (e.g., perception; linguistics), the design of new ones (e.g., machine vision; machine intelligence), and the design of interfaces between different forms of intelligent agent (e.g., human-computer interfaces). Cognitive Systems offers four degrees - two offered by the Faculty of Arts and two offered by the Faculty of Science. Students can pursue a B.A. in Cognition in Brain; a B.A. in Linguistics; a B.Sc. in Cognition and Brain; or a B.Sc. in Computational Intelligence and Design.
