Dr. Joshua Brown
Cognitive Control Lab
Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences
Indiana University, Bloomington
Dr. Joshua Brown joined the Indiana University Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences in 2006 as an assistant professor. Since that time, he has quickly shown himself to be both a brilliant scholar and an exceptional teacher, earning him an Indiana University Outstanding Junior Faculty Award this year.
Dr. Brown’s research runs the gamut, but his primary research interest is the frontal region of the brain, where much of our goal-directed, predictive, preferential, and evaluative functions are centered. His Cognitive Control Lab, a part of the Imaging Research Facility, analyzes the ways in which people learn and plan behavior in complex, dynamic environments. The research combines cognitive theory, computational modeling, and functional neuroimaging to try to tackle these questions from multiple angles simultaneously. His lab’s research has been covered by a range of media sources, including National Public Radio and Die Welt.
In 2009, Dr. Brown received a two-year $683,736 grant from the National Institutes of Health for fMRI research localization brain functions that predict the outcome of one’s own actions. In particular, Brown’s research is interested in how the brain analyzes the probability of making mistakes, and the cognitive mechanisms underlying decision-making in risky situations, including drug-taking and unprotected sex.
Dr. Brown completed his Ph.D. in Cognitive and Neural Systems at Boston University in 2000, holding postdoctoral fellowship positions at Vanderbilt University in 2001 and at Washington University in St. Louis from 2001 to 2005.
